So after witnessing some atrocious things at my school (lots of atrocious things, actually) I have put together a list of things (rules, if you please) that everybody should keep in mind when getting dressed. And I really, really need to get these things off my chest. Actually, these things should just be commonly accepted facts, or laws, of the fashion-universe. However, I do use the term "law" in a way that means 99% of the people out there NEED TO ABIDE BY THESE RULES. For that oh so lucky one percent, sometimes you can let these things fly. However, my altered definition of a fashion law only applies to some of the following rules. Others are just common sense and not even that one percent can break them. So here we go. Be prepared for my most merciless critique of fashion faux-pas.
1. Brown and black DO NOT MATCH. I'm sorry, these two colors are just not acceptable when worn at the same time. Most commonly the offense I see at school are girls wearing chestnut colored Ugg boots and black sweats. It's just not cute. However, this is one of those 99% rules. There are certain circumstances under which brown and black can work in harmony. However, this is a rarity and is a) not permissible when wearing any sort of sweat pants or lounging attire and b) should not be attempted by those who really have no idea what they're doing. The fashion world is a complicated, misunderstood place after all.
2. LEGGINGS ARE NOT PANTS. Let me repeat, leggings are not pants. They do not serve as an equal replacement for pants, nor do they make you look good, nor should they be accepted as pants in any way shape or form. They're only encouraging a God-awful camel toe. And seriously, who wants to have one of those? Also, they don't look cute as pants. Personally, I love love love leggings, but you have to wear them with something that covers your bum. Otherwise, it's just not a good look. You might end up coming across as a trashy ho bag when you're not. And even if you are, putting on jeans instead of leggings or wearing a proper shirt/tunic/whatever suits you with leggings might do yourself a favor and improve your reputation.
3. Never ever ever ever ever ever (need I say more evers?) wear Ugg boots with shorts, skirts, or anything but pants. This look is not attractive. Plus who wears Uggs in the summer? No one. You know why? Because unless you live in Antarctica, it's about 85 degrees outside and people generally don't like to wear fur-covered boots in hot weather. I don't even know what else there is to say here... just please, do not ever commit this crime. It's heinous. (During homecoming week, my school had a fashion disaster day, and guess what I wore? Yep, Uggs and a mini skirt. I was lookin' super classy.)
4. Wedges, or heels or what-have-you, are not meant to be worn with socks. And neither are flats. This is just positively repulsive. I mean really, why would you take away from the beauty of a wedge by wearing a tube sock with it. One word: Ew.
5. If your nail polish is chipped beyond belief and is looking atrocious, take it off so you don't look homeless. Please. There is no need to go into more detail here as this rule is just quite concise and should be followed 100% of the time.
Of course, that is just a brief, to-the-point, list of clothing (and nail care) crimes that are often committed nowadays. It's really bothersome to see all these things just occur on a regular basis. I mean really people, just take a good look at yourself before you leave the house.
Now that I have finished my little rant, I would like to bid you all a good night. Hope everyone has a fantastic week and is looking forward to the holidays! (Personally, I'm looking forward to some warm weather soon :D).

Your blog is spot on today. I couldn't agree more. The lack of fashion sense is just ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteThanks for providing a good read and a good laugh!
But what about those folks who just don't care what others think?? Aren't we supposed to live and let live?
ReplyDeleteOther than the camel toe and Uggs with Mini discussion, I think you might be a bit too harsh here.
(and by the way, when a camel looks at his foot, does he think he should put a shoe on to cover it up??)
I agree with you, Bear, based on the students I see at Safeway. On the whole, the dress code is atrocious, both male and female. I have always enjoyed being a girl, and like to look well turned out in becoming attire. So keep on looking like your pretty self!
ReplyDeleteOn another note, I hope you will wear just plain low shopes with that beautiful red dress - don't detract any attention from it!
Did y our Mom show you the vintage beaded bag? I like to remember some of the pretty clothes I have had, and wish I had saved some of the really special ones for you! I had a gorgeous ivory damask Princesse cut evening coat, also an elegant shades of blue lame on black ground evening gown, and most memorable of all, a heavy white crepe bias cut gown with the top solid bugle beads. So save your really special clothing, and maybe someday you will have a daughter or granddaughter who will want to wear them! L & K Nanny
