Golden Globes

As you all most likely know, the Golden Globes went down about a week ago. I have decided to offer my own personal fashion critique of some of the outfits of the night! I was impressed by a great deal of lovely dresses, there were, unfortunately, an equal number of unsightly dresses. But, without further adieu, I present MB's merciless Golden Globes 2010 dress critique.

So I think Penelope Cruz is stunning. However, her tan is looking a liiitttle overdone... and although E!'s Fashion Police dubbed Ms. Cruz as the best dressed for the evening, I have to disagree. There are just too many things going on in this dress. I would have loved to see this Giorgio Armani Prive dress without all the lace at the top. Or perhaps with the lace and without the obvious banding on the bodice. But the lace and the banding are just not working. Both are beautiful, but each one is trying to overpower the other. Definitely not a good combination.

Oh dear... I don't even know what to say here other than COVER UP SOME OF THAT CLEAVAGE, MARIAH! It's just not attractive. Although Herve Ledger by Max Azria generally flatters a woman's body, it does not do so (I repeat, does not do so) when said woman has giant melons shoved into a plunging neckline dress. This gown is gorgeous, no doubt, but would have been much, much better on someone with a little smaller chest, like Kate Hudson.

This dress is absolutely stunning on Maggie Gyllenhaal. She's wearing a dress by RM by Roland Mouret, and it's gorgeous. I love it. The color looks great, and the dress is so sculptural. I give my full approval. (Not that anyone was asking, but hey.)

There was quite a bit of controversy over Kate's dress here. Although it squishes down her bosom a little, I think the architectural aspects look marvelous. I love how it's white, and it doesn't look like anything I have seen. She looks fabulous in this Marchesa number, yes? Also look at those shoes! I die a bit inside each time I see them.

Although I love vintage and I love YSL, this is not working. I'm not in love with the jewelry, and black and gold is very spring 2009. Plus it's jersey. Who wears jersey to the Golden Globes?! I would have expected much better from Julia Roberts, for goodness sake. I'm sure the dress would have worked out just fine for a number of other occasions, but not the Golden Globes.

First of all, Jennifer Aniston is smokin'. And this dress is totally tits. (Italicized, even!) It makes sense that this dress is Valentino, as it's completely sexy and daring. There isn't much to say here other than Brad Pitt would have looked way, way better with my girl Jen than Angelina Jolie, whose outfit was not even worth posting. Sorry, Angelina.

Is January Jones on her way to a funeral or something? The Lanvin dress is entirely too modest for a woman her age, and is so, well, stuffy. The head band is not helping either. This was quite possibly my least favorite dress of the night.

Wait, I take that back. And now let me say WHAT THE HELL WAS FERGIE THINKING?! Sorry for the rash language, but she looks like she went to David's Bridal to pick out a cheap looking dress and is heading off to her senior prom. Plus, if things could get any worse, this dress has spaghetti straps. I feel as though we're in a time warp back to 2003. Elie Saab, you have done so many beautiful things in the past. What happened!?

Okay, I'm totally loving Emily Blunt's Dolce & Gabbana. And not because I love Emily Blunt or because I love Dolce & Gabbana. Strictly because this dress is simply gorgeous. The pastel pink is almost cutting it close to being pallid, but it's just the perfect shade. And oh, it is so very Dolce & Gabbana! Definitely one of my favorites of the night.

This is just a big, fat no. However, the Atelier Versace gown could have been pulled off by the likes of Tyra Banks had it had the hip growth removed. The nude tone is way too close to Drew Barrymore's skintone and both of the, err, embellishments look like dried up moldy sponges. I was definitely not liking this one bit.

So finally we have Christina Hendricks in Christian Siriano! First of all, I love him. And this gown looks just like something he would have produced on Project Runway with a bit more refinements. It's absolutely stunning. However, it wasn't quite working for Mad Men's voluptuous (!!!) star. The color was off and I would have liked to see this on someone tall and thin. I think Chanel Iman or Jourdan Dunn would have looked absolutely sensational in this dress! But what would a young runway model be doing at the Golden Globes? Anyway, love the dress, just not too fond of the way it's worn.

Well I suppose that is quite enough posting for the day! I need to head off to bed, I'm thoroughly exhausted.

Good night, faithful readers! :)

  1. Your critique is spot on. And it makes me laugh (in a good way). I always enjoy reading your posts. Can't wait to the day you are a feature writer for Vogue or Elle Magazine. Great job! Keep it up. Can't wait to read your next post.

  2. I loved this Post, too! You really write like a seasoned pro - very incisiveand witty, as well. I'm proud of you, Bear!

Now as to your commentary, guess I am pretty old fashioned, but none of the dresses really turned me on. I see what a beautiful woman Jennifer Anniston is, but not in that "tart" dress. I really think the dress should enhance the woman, but with all of these dresses it is the other way around.

Now that is just my opinion, and no doubt, I am in the minority! L n K Nanny

  4. I am thinking that Mariah and Christina got the wrong idea when the invitation for them to attend the golden globes arrived. Perhaps the invite said something like "...we would appreciate your attendance at the golden globes..." and they read it as "...we would appreciate your golden globes attending...?!?"

But really, from a guy's perspective, I don't see what the problem is?!? If I paid a whole bunch of money for new hubcaps on my car,I would be showing them off any time anywhere!!
